Excessive bleeding after childbirth, also known as postpartum haemorrhage, is the leading cause of maternal deaths globally. For the prevention of postpartum haemorrhage, misoprostol is a WHO recognised alternative to oxytocin. For the management of postpartum haemorrhage, misoprostol is used in combination with oxytocin as part of a broader treatment approach. Misoclear misoprostol works by causing contractions of the womb and softening the cervix (mouth of the womb) to expel the pregnancy. You can expect to experience some side effects after taking misoprostol, including mild to strong cramping, heavy bleeding, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and mild fever.

Misoclear can be used as early as 4 weeks and up to 9 – 12 weeks from your last menstrual period. After consultation with a healthcare professional, medical abortion can be done at home in private, at a time convenient to you.
For medical abortion, you can either take Misoclear sublingually (under the tongue), vaginally or buccally. The misoprostol will be just as effective if you put them under the tongue, in the cheek or in the vagina, although the pills dissolve faster under the tongue and can be viewed as being more private.
Sublingually (under the tongue)
Place 4 tablets under the tongue and allow to dissolve for 30 minutes. Swallow what is left in your mouth with water. Wait 3 hours.
Additional doses of 4 tablets can be used in 3-hour intervals until expulsion of products of conception up to a maximum of 3 times.
OR
Vaginally
Insert 4 tablets into the deepest part of the vagina and lie down for 30 minutes.

Misoclear (misoprostol) can generally be used safely alongside many commonly used medicines. Clinical studies have not identified any significant interactions between misoprostol and most pain-relief medicines, including ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen, diclofenac, piroxicam and indomethacin. Some antacids may affect how well Misoclear works. In particular, antacids containing magnesium may increase the likelihood of diarrhoea or stomach discomfort.
If you are taking any medicines regularly, or have concerns about possible interactions, speak to your healthcare provider before using Misoclear.
The side effects of misoprostol when it is used for medical abortion are usually an extension of its pharmacological action. It’s normal to see large blood clots (up to the size of a lemon) or clumps of tissue when this is happening. It is like having a really heavy, crampy period, and the process is very similar to an early miscarriage. You might have chills, feel sick or experience vomiting or diarrhea. The incidence of diarrhea can be minimised if Misoclear is taken with a meal or at bedtime and by avoiding taking concomitant antacids containing magnesium. Once the pregnancy passes, the amount of bleeding should noticeably reduce. You can read more about side effects here.
